Metaesquema II, 1958
Gouache on cardboard
55 x 63,9 cm
Donated by Hélio Oiticica Project

As defined in the work’s name, virtual meta – dimension of movement, time and space, scheme – structure, the Metaesquemas are structures that seem to move in the space. Produced between 1957 and 1958, only in 1972 the artist elaborated a reflection on that work: "The metaesquemas are the first experiences on shape’s dynamics. There are blocks and colors moving on a plane, researching their limits and possibilities." These works from the initial phase of the artist’s career show the movement of simple geometric shapes, one sole color within a limited field: the paper’s surface. We can add to this the observation of the precise spacing among the shapes, which means that in addition to being a transgressor and a rather radical person, Oiticica was also an extremely strict artist when it came to technique.
